Each type of airplane and also its engines have a specific useful life period, over which both are subject to mandatory inspections to renew their time of usefulness. In the both cases they suffer an operation that, in the aeronautical slang, is known only as Overhaul.

In the Overhaul operation, the engines are disassembled up to the smallest detail, performed a very careful verification of wear over it's different mobile parts, detected eventual corrosion and the possibility of needing yo repairs. A set of mobile parts, completely defined by the manufacturers, is than completely replaced for another set where the parts are completely new.

These Overhaul procedures, foreseen and authorized by the manufacturers, replace the engine useful life, making them as new or Rebuilt. The remaining components (mobiles crankshaft and camshaft for example) are subject to NDTs (No n Destructive Tests) and also to rigorous dimensional examinations, in accordance with the manufacturers specifications. In this case, the parts are subjected to high electric charges so that, through the use of penetrating liquids that incorporate magnetic particles, it's possible, to detect fractures, using an Ultraviolet lamp and fall upon them the "black light". In the case of an existing fracture, the defective parts are replaced by a new original one. If, on the opposite, they remain in perfect state, they are incorporated together with the new parts and the engine is reassembled.

At last, the engine is installed in a test bench on which normal operational conditions are reproduced to verify if the performance touch or surpass the manufacturer's values. Only in those conditions the engine is approved and it is issue an EASA Form 1 to assure the perfect condition of that engine Other components such as magnetos, carburetors or injection systems, starter engines and alternators are also submitted to recovery operations through general revisions similar to the engines overhaul described above.
